Doctor Said She Has Cancerous Growth in Her Body, But a Simple Test Has Changed the Diagnosis

Tina had suffered from headaches and nausea for six months, but, inexplicably, she was gaining weight. Her kidney and liver function proved problematical with medical tests. She felt so ill she barely had the energy to work, and was becoming emotionally drained by her mysterious ailment. Finally, a specialist handed down a dreadful diagnosis. Tina Breen had a possible bowel obstruction or a cancerous growth in her body!<br />

Naturally, Breen was horrified and begged for more tests. She saw three different specialists, and the final physician suggested a simple test for pregnancy. Breen was not a bit concerned about pregnancy. She had been using a contraceptive implant that lasts for five years, and the mother of four had recently switched to contraceptive injections.<br />

Shockingly, the pregnancy test proved positive! However, the test determined that Breen was five or six weeks pregnant, and she knew that this must be a false reading. She had not been sexually active in the last five or six weeks.<br />
<br />
Breen asked for another test. This time, a hormone called HCG was detected, which is a determiner of how advanced a pregnancy can be. Doctors suspected a more advanced pregnancy, with a cancerous embryo, possibly resulting from the contraceptive injection Breen had received. The doctor prescribed a scan to determine how the embryo could be removed.<br />

Such a pregnancy is rare and is called a molar pregnancy. An egg is fertilized, but the placenta develops into an abnormal mass consisting only of cysts. An embryo may not form at all, or begins to develop but is so malformed that survival is not possible.<br />
<br />
A Molar pregnancy is caused by an abnormal egg that becomes fertilized. The egg may not have a nucleus, to begin with or have an inactivated nucleus. Humans normally contain 23 pairs of chromosomes, so one of the chromosomes in each pair is donated by the father. In a molar pregnancy, the chromosomes from the mother are inactivated and the fathers are duplicated.<br />
<br />
A partial, or incomplete molar pregnancy can occur if two sperm fertilizes the same egg. When that happens, an embryo will have 69 chromosomes, instead of the required 23. Only about one in 1,000 pregnancies are molar, and mothers are usually older than 35 or younger than 20.<br />

Breen’s doctor was concerned because this type of pregnancy has serious complication as well as possibilities for a rare form of cancer. After removal of a molar pregnancy, tissue may remain and grow. Molar pregnancies can be invasive, just like cancer, and penetrate the uterine wall, causing bleeding.  Early treatment is imperative, but Tina Breen had been suffering symptoms for five or six months!<br />

Imagine the surprise and consternation of Breen and her doctor when the scan revealed that 24-week-old twins were the cause of all her symptoms! After the initial shock, the concern was that one of the twins might not be viable, or able to survive.<br />
Breen later learned that both twins were healthy.<br />
<br />
Needless to say, Tina, already the mother of four, was challenged by the very thought of fitting two more children into her family, let alone two babies at once! She would need to reconsider her job, her lifestyle – everything would be changed and turned upside down. At times she was not very positive about the coming delivery of twins.<br />
<br />
The other four children made all the difference. They were extremely enthusiastic about the coming babies. Breen says now, “Their excitement really helped me through.” The new siblings were a healthy boy and a girl, Arabella, and Caleb.<br />

The visible part is the outer ear. It collects sounds and directs them to your ear canal. This tubular passage is about one inch long and terminates at the eardrum. Lining the canal are glands that produce earwax. Its purpose is to protect the canal by trapping debris, preventing eardrum damage. Earwax also creates an acidic environment that bacteria find distasteful.<br />

Middle Ear<br />

Your middle ear is a pea-sized cavity. It transforms sound waves into vibrations and ferries them to the inner ear. Separating the middle and inner ear is the eardrum. As its name suggests, it stretches tightly across the canal like a drum.<br />

Now we get to the crux of the matter. Descending from the middle ear is the Eustachian tube. It connects to the back of your nose. It serves as a pressure valve. Normally, the Eustachian tube is closed for business. This protects the middle ear from loud sounds. It can also hold water captive. However, when the tube detects a difference in air pressure at either side of the eardrum, it automatically opens! By allowing air to enter, it diffuses the force that could otherwise damage the eardrum. When the tube opens, you hear a popping sound. After taking part in an experimental research project at the University of Gothenburg, Malin Stenberg gave birth to a healthy baby boy.<br />
Though Malin had always wanted to have a child with her boyfriend Claes Nilsson, Malin was unfortunately born with Rokitansky Syndrome. This genetic condition causes women to be born with a vagina or a uterus. While surgery can be used to create artificial vaginas, up until now, there was no way to replace the missing uterus. Claess wanted to have a child with Malin, so he managed to get her accepted into a risky research project run by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Malin was one of just nine women selected for this medical study.<br />

The purpose of the study was to determine if it was possible for a donor uterus to be implanted successfully in a woman. A donated uterus from a dead person is typically rejected, so Malin had to find someone who was willing to give up their uterus while still alive. Eventually, a family friend, 61-year-old Ewa Rosen, decided she would donate her uterus to Malin because Ewa no longer needed it. The transplantation was a success, and just 43 days after the surgery, Malin had a menstrual cycle for the first time in her life at the age of 37.<br />
After the operation was shown to be successful, Malin began trying to get pregnant by having fertilised eggs implanted in her new uterus. It took a year of trying, but the couple eventually reported that Malin was pregnant. The baby developed normally until the 31st week of Malin’s pregnancy, when she had a C-section delivery. He is now a happy, healthy one year old named Vincent, and his godmother is Ewa Rosen. Malin says, “it feels like we went from nothing at all to having this wonderful boy…We are more than happy with this. I couldn’t wish for more.”<br />

Malin is not the only woman in the study to successfully have a pregnancy. Seven out of the nine women were able to accept a donated uterus without their bodies rejecting the organ. Out of these seven women, four of them were able to successfully give birth, giving the study a success rate of almost 50 percent. Most of the women, including Malin, later chose to have the donor uterus removed because they no longer wanted to take all of the artificial hormones necessary to maintain the donated organ.<br />

This procedure is still in experimental stages, so there are still many risks involved. It is very expensive, so many women cannot afford the procedure, and it can be hard to find a person who is willing to donate their uterus. The procedure is also medically dangerous because a person can become very sick if their body rejects a donated organ. Even after a successful transplant, there is some medical risk due to the high levels of hormones and immunosuppressant drugs required to maintain the donated uterus. However, it still gives hope to many women who are unable to become pregnant because their uterus is missing or damaged. Hopefully, with more research, the risks of this procedure will become diminished, and more women may be able to give birth after a successful uterine transplant.<br />
