The Whiteleys had the surprise of a lifetime when they learned they were having identical triplets, a birth that occurs only once every million.
“The fact that they’re identical is incredible. It’s the first set of identical triplets I’ve ever seen. I’ve been in neonatology for 40 years,” Dr. Savitri Kumar of Detroit’s Henry Ford hospital told Michigan’s WXYZ.
What’s even more incredible? There’s no history of triplets in Lauren and Mike’s families. The couple, who lives in Michigan, also conceived Alexander, Nicholas and Timothy naturally, unlike thousands of couples who get pregnant via In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) each year.
“It was really early on in the pregnancy, we found out at just a routine ultrasound. She said, ‘I see three.’ I said, ‘What?!’ ” Lauren said.
The tots spent about a month in the neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU) before Lauren and Mike brought them home. They quickly thought of great methods to be able to tell the identical triplets apart, as you’ll see in the video below.
Thanks to their parents and two older sons (ages 2 and 3), the couple is getting a great amount of help to care for their blessings.
“We always wanted a big family and we got it all at once, I guess,” Lauren said.
