This 9-Year-Old Girl Finally Comes Home After Life-Changing Surgery on Her Face Melted Into Her Chest

This story is from the Grossman Burn Center where a nine-year-old girl’s struggle after being badly burned in a fire in her home country of Afghanistan. Local doctors treated her without pain medication, and then told her family to pray for her death. After her father took her to U.S. troops and explained her story, they ensured that she went to a top burn center in California for treatment. Watch part one of Zubaida’s story to learn more about her determined father, her caring surgeons, and the strong little herself.
Zubaida’s cheeks and chin had melted to her chest, forcing her eyes and mouth open.

Doctor Said She Has Cancerous Growth in Her Body, But a Simple Test Has Changed the Diagnosis

bleeding, bowel obstruction, cancer, cancerous growth in her body, contraceptive implant, contraceptive injections, cysts, delivery of twins, egg is fertilized, gaining weight, headaches and nausea, medical tests, molar pregnancy, no energy to work, pregnancy test positive, six weeks pregnI was constantly at the doctors getting different things looked at,” said Tina Breen, of Adelaide, Australia. Tina had suffered from headaches and nausea for six months, but, inexplicably, she was gaining weight. Her kidney and liver function proved problematical with medical tests. She felt so ill she barely had the energy to work, and was becoming emotionally drained by her mysterious ailment. Finally, a specialist handed down a dreadful diagnosis. Tina Breen had a possible bowel obstruction or a cancerous growth in her body!

ant, test for pregnancy, twins were healthy, type of pregnancy
Naturally, Breen was horrified and begged for more tests. She saw three different specialists, and the final physician suggested a simple test for pregnancy. Breen was not a bit concerned about pregnancy. She had been using a contraceptive implant that lasts for five years, and the mother of four had recently switched to contraceptive injections.

Shockingly, the pregnancy test proved positive! However, the test determined that Breen was five or six weeks pregnant, and she knew that this must be a false reading. She had not been sexually active in the last five or six weeks.

Breen asked for another test. This time, a hormone called HCG was detected, which is a determiner of how advanced a pregnancy can be. Doctors suspected a more advanced pregnancy, with a cancerous embryo, possibly resulting from the contraceptive injection Breen had received. The doctor prescribed a scan to determine how the embryo could be removed.

Such a pregnancy is rare and is called a molar pregnancy. An egg is fertilized, but the placenta develops into an abnormal mass consisting only of cysts. An embryo may not form at all, or begins to develop but is so malformed that survival is not possible.

A Molar pregnancy is caused by an abnormal egg that becomes fertilized. The egg may not have a nucleus, to begin with or have an inactivated nucleus. Humans normally contain 23 pairs of chromosomes, so one of the chromosomes in each pair is donated by the father. In a molar pregnancy, the chromosomes from the mother are inactivated and the fathers are duplicated.

A partial, or incomplete molar pregnancy can occur if two sperm fertilizes the same egg. When that happens, an embryo will have 69 chromosomes, instead of the required 23. Only about one in 1,000 pregnancies are molar, and mothers are usually older than 35 or younger than 20.

Breen’s doctor was concerned because this type of pregnancy has serious complication as well as possibilities for a rare form of cancer. After removal of a molar pregnancy, tissue may remain and grow. Molar pregnancies can be invasive, just like cancer, and penetrate the uterine wall, causing bleeding.  Early treatment is imperative, but Tina Breen had been suffering symptoms for five or six months!

Imagine the surprise and consternation of Breen and her doctor when the scan revealed that 24-week-old twins were the cause of all her symptoms! After the initial shock, the concern was that one of the twins might not be viable, or able to survive.
Breen later learned that both twins were healthy.

Needless to say, Tina, already the mother of four, was challenged by the very thought of fitting two more children into her family, let alone two babies at once! She would need to reconsider her job, her lifestyle – everything would be changed and turned upside down. At times she was not very positive about the coming delivery of twins.

The other four children made all the difference. They were extremely enthusiastic about the coming babies. Breen says now, “Their excitement really helped me through.” The new siblings were a healthy boy and a girl, Arabella, and Caleb.

After Reading This You Will Stop Showering Everyday!

A daily shower seems like just another part of your routine: shower, brush teeth, etc. But some research suggests that daily showers could actually be bad for you. This might seem counterintuitive, especially to someone from a culture that prizes cleanliness. Walk down any drugstore aisle, and you’re bound to see more body washes than you thought existed.

Specifically, though, when you shower, soap strips your skin of its natural oils. While some oil-stripping is good (especially if you have skin that is very acne-prone), too much can leave your skin dry. skin that is dry may be more predisposed to eczema, cracking, itchiness, and other difficulties.
Overshowering is especially important to avoid during the winter months. In winter, the combination of cold and dry air makes many people’s skin dry out substantially. That’s why so many of us carry chapstick in the winter. When you combine overshowering and the already-drying air, your skin will be more prone to dryness, cracking, and irritation. When skin becomes extremely dry, it can even be painful.
There are plenty of people who would enthusiastically argue that not showering daily is gross. However, on days when you aren’t exercising heavily enough to break a sweat, not showering is actually better for your skin. When you do go to the gym or otherwise exercise, showering is healthiest. Leaving sweat on the skin can lead to breakouts – plus, it just feels strange to go about your day with a salty sweat-crust.
Not everyone knows this, but like the bacteria in your gut, some bacteria on your skin is actually good for you. when you scrub away all bacteria, you also remove the good bacteria, leaving your skin more prone to invasion.
Of course, when you shower each day after exercising, it is usually not necessary to wash your hair each time. Like skin, hair relies on natural oils to keep it healthy. Routinely removing these oils can lead to dullness, frizz, ad breakage. Some people with oily hair opt to use a dry shampoo on days they don’t wash; others simply wash daily anyway if the oil becomes too much.
Essentially, moderation is key. you don’t want to be walking around covered in sweat, but on non-exercise days, skipping a shower won’t hurt. If you don’t exercise, showering a few times a week is healthiest for your skin. Being judicious in your showers is likely to keep your skin healthier.

7 Simple Hacks to Empty Water From Ears!

Ahoy, Mate! Are you a lover of water sports? Summer is prime time for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. A common problem is waterlogged ears. You may do a ping-pong thing with your finger to open them. Perhaps you try stopping the slosh with a cotton ball. You may feel resigned to wait out the auditory fog. However, there are several simple remedies. Following are easy ways to exit the Tunnel of Muffle. The Lay of the Land

ears:final
Let’s take a snapshot of ear anatomy for a picture of where the problem lies. Your ear has three buddies that work together to process sound. They are the outer, middle, and inner ear.

Outer Ear

The visible part is the outer ear. It collects sounds and directs them to your ear canal. This tubular passage is about one inch long and terminates at the eardrum. Lining the canal are glands that produce earwax. Its purpose is to protect the canal by trapping debris, preventing eardrum damage. Earwax also creates an acidic environment that bacteria find distasteful.

Middle Ear

Your middle ear is a pea-sized cavity. It transforms sound waves into vibrations and ferries them to the inner ear. Separating the middle and inner ear is the eardrum. As its name suggests, it stretches tightly across the canal like a drum.

Now we get to the crux of the matter. Descending from the middle ear is the Eustachian tube. It connects to the back of your nose. It serves as a pressure valve. Normally, the Eustachian tube is closed for business. This protects the middle ear from loud sounds. It can also hold water captive. However, when the tube detects a difference in air pressure at either side of the eardrum, it automatically opens! By allowing air to enter, it diffuses the force that could otherwise damage the eardrum. When the tube opens, you hear a popping sound. One of the ways to release trapped water is to open the Eustachian tube. More on this follows soon.

Ear Water

Inner Ear

Your inner ear contains a snail-shaped organ called the cochlea. It converts sound vibrations into nerve impulses. The messages travel along the auditory nerve to the brain. There, they are interpreted and recognized as specific sounds. The inner ear also houses three semicircular canals that maintain balance.

Drat! It’s Trapped!

When a large volume of water enters your ear canal, it can get trapped. Since the canal dips downward, the fluid may not drain. A backlog of water is a problem. It can lead to inflammation, irritation, and infection of the ear canal. This condition is known as swimmer’s ear.

If fluid remains captive behind the eardrum, it can harbor bacteria. This can cause an infection of the middle ear. The Eustachian tube can also swell, preventing fluid from draining.

Resolving the Clog

Whew! That’s enough of the scary stuff. Fortunately, there are easy ways to release trapped water.

1. The Vacuum Effect

You can release the fluid by creating a temporary vacuum. The suction will draw the water in your ear toward your hand.

Tilt your head sideways, with the clogged ear parallel to the ground.
Place your palm flat against your ear.
Press firmly for a few seconds.
Quickly remove your hand.
Pump several times until you feel the fluid drain.
2. Alcohol-Vinegar Solution

This remedy will both rid the ear of water and prevent infection. The alcohol speeds water evaporation. The acidic vinegar dissolves any involved earwax. It also discourages bacteria from hangi
  • Mix one teaspoon each of alcohol and white vinegar in a cup.
  • Siphon the solution with an eyedropper.
  • Tilt your head sideways, and hold the dropper above your ear canal.
  • Release three drops.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Raise your head and let the excess fluid evacuate.
3. Blow Dryer Method
The warm, dry air from the machine will pull out and evaporate the water.
  • Gently pull your ear lobe down.
  • Set the dryer temp to “Warm” and the air flow to “Low.”
  • Turn the unit on, and hold it 1 foot from your ear canal.
  • Keep it in position for 30 seconds.
  • Repeat a second time if needed.
4. Warm Compress
A warm compress will open the Eustachian tube.
  • Dip a washcloth in a bowl of warm water, and wring out the excess.
  • Hold the cloth against the clogged ear for 30 seconds.
  • Wait a minute and repeat.
  • Lie on your side to summon the aid of gravity.
5. Steam
Steam opens the Eustachian tube and releases built-up fluid.
  • Pour steaming water into a large bowl.
  • Cover your head with a towel.
  • Hold the clogged ear over the steam.
  • Feel that fluid flow. Yes!
6. Valsalva Maneuver
This technique opens the Eustachian tube and equalizes air pressure.
  • Close your mouth, and pinch your nostrils closed with your fingers.
  • Take a deep breath, and gently bring air up through your throat.
  • Blow air through your ears for two seconds.
  • Use the degree of effort needed to inflate a balloon.
  • The force of the exhalation will equalize the air pressure.
  • If done correctly, you’ll hear a slight pop, announcing the opening of the Eustachian tube.
7. Toynbee Maneuver
This is another method of ear equalization. Swallowing pulls the Eustachian tube open.
  • Take a sip of water.
  • Pinch your nose closed.
  • Swallow the water with your nose pinched.
Staying Out of the Tunnel
Preventive techniques will keep you out of the tunnel. Here are some ways to hold water at bay.
Swimming
Swim molds prevent water from entering by sealing the ear canal. Silicone creates a tight lip to lock out water. You can also wear a neoprene headband to augment the water-blocking effect.
Another option is wearing a swim cap. Following are some considerations for choosing the best type:
  • Lap Swimming – For face-in-the-water swimming, choose a latex or silicone swim cap.
  • Open Water Swimming – Neoprene offers more insulation than latex.
  • Racing – Molded silicone reduces drag during races.
Snorkeling and Diving
The key to avoiding underwater clogs is to keep the Eustachian tubes open. As you descend into the water and before discomfort hits, do the Valsalva maneuver. You can also do the Toynbee. Simultaneously pinch your nose and swallow. A third option is to tilt your head from side to side. This stretches the folds around the Eustachian tubes and helps to keep them open.
Be Proactive
By practicing prevention and damage control, your ears can stay comfortable and healthy. Proven techniques to clear waterlogged ears are:
1. Vacuum Effect
2. Alcohol-Vinegar Solution
3. Blow Dryer Method
4. Warm Compress
5. Steam
6. Valsalva Maneuver
7. Toynbee Maneuver
Preventive Measures are:
1. Swim molds, headbands, and swim caps.
2. Valsalva, Toynbee, and Head Tilts.
Enjoy your water sports!

America’s Killer: Tips for Preventing Heart Disease

boost to motivate yourself, Check Your Blood Pressure, Do Not Smoke, healthy diet, heart disease, increase energy, Lose Weight, lower your heart rate, Lower Your Stress, makes your heart stronger, stroke and heart attack, sudden death
Heart disease kills more Americans than any other health condition and can be developed at any age. Fortunately, there are things you can do in order to prevent the number one killer in America. Below are some tips for preventing heart disease and ideas for staying healthy.

Physical Activity
Exercise makes your heart stronger and also helps to lower your resting heart rate, which means your heart won’t have to work as hard. One of the many great things about exercise is that you don’t have to do a lot of it in order to benefit from it. In fact, you can benefit just by getting 2.5 hours of exercise in per week. Running, walking, cycling, and dancing are just some of the ways you can get some easy exercise in your day.

Many people take supplements before they exercise in order to get more out of their workout. Certain supplments can improve overall health and can help give you energy when you need a boost to motivate yourself for your next workout.

Check Your Blood Pressure
Keeping your blood pressure under control will help lower your risk of heart disease and has to be checked regularly, because you may not experience symptoms if it is elevated. High blood pressure puts strain on your heart, which is one of the reasons it is so dangerous. In addition to having your blood pressure checked at your physicals, you may also want to check it at home. Many people are nervous while they are in the doctor’s office, which can raise their blood pressure. This is a phenomenon known as white coat syndrome so home blood pressure readings may be more accurate in certain cases.

This Revolutionary Procedure Helped This Woman to Become the First Person to Ever Give Birth THIS Way

born with a vagina, create artificial vaginas, donated organ, donor uterus, gave birth to a healthy baby, Give Birth, infertility, Menstrual cycle, replace the missing uterus, Revolutionary Procedure, Rokitansky Syndrome, successful uterine transplant
Many people worldwide deal with issues related to infertility, but as medical science becomes more advanced, new treatments offer hope to some. One couple in Sweden was able to successfully have a child after a revolutionary new procedure. After taking part in an experimental research project at the University of Gothenburg, Malin Stenberg gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Though Malin had always wanted to have a child with her boyfriend Claes Nilsson, Malin was unfortunately born with Rokitansky Syndrome. This genetic condition causes women to be born with a vagina or a uterus. While surgery can be used to create artificial vaginas, up until now, there was no way to replace the missing uterus. Claess wanted to have a child with Malin, so he managed to get her accepted into a risky research project run by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Malin was one of just nine women selected for this medical study.

She-is-the-first-in-the-world-to-give-birth-like-THIS.-The-healthy-1-year-old-has-made-his...-5

The purpose of the study was to determine if it was possible for a donor uterus to be implanted successfully in a woman. A donated uterus from a dead person is typically rejected, so Malin had to find someone who was willing to give up their uterus while still alive. Eventually, a family friend, 61-year-old Ewa Rosen, decided she would donate her uterus to Malin because Ewa no longer needed it. The transplantation was a success, and just 43 days after the surgery, Malin had a menstrual cycle for the first time in her life at the age of 37.
After the operation was shown to be successful, Malin began trying to get pregnant by having fertilised eggs implanted in her new uterus. It took a year of trying, but the couple eventually reported that Malin was pregnant. The baby developed normally until the 31st week of Malin’s pregnancy, when she had a C-section delivery. He is now a happy, healthy one year old named Vincent, and his godmother is Ewa Rosen. Malin says, “it feels like we went from nothing at all to having this wonderful boy…We are more than happy with this. I couldn’t wish for more.”

Malin is not the only woman in the study to successfully have a pregnancy. Seven out of the nine women were able to accept a donated uterus without their bodies rejecting the organ. Out of these seven women, four of them were able to successfully give birth, giving the study a success rate of almost 50 percent. Most of the women, including Malin, later chose to have the donor uterus removed because they no longer wanted to take all of the artificial hormones necessary to maintain the donated organ.

This procedure is still in experimental stages, so there are still many risks involved. It is very expensive, so many women cannot afford the procedure, and it can be hard to find a person who is willing to donate their uterus. The procedure is also medically dangerous because a person can become very sick if their body rejects a donated organ. Even after a successful transplant, there is some medical risk due to the high levels of hormones and immunosuppressant drugs required to maintain the donated uterus. However, it still gives hope to many women who are unable to become pregnant because their uterus is missing or damaged. Hopefully, with more research, the risks of this procedure will become diminished, and more women may be able to give birth after a successful uterine transplant.

10 Interesting Things That Happens To A Woman’s Vagina During Childbirth

After childbirth, Blood blisters, Chadwick's sign, childbirth, episiotomy, hormone relaxin, human Chorionic Gonadotropin, indicator of pregnancy, physical changes, Pop Out A Kid, post-partum bleeding, pregnancy, Pregnant women, reproductive system, second trimester, third trimester, urinary stress, uterus, vagina and labia, vagina stretches, vaginal area, vaginal discharge, Vaginal tearing, vaginal varicose veins, varicose veins, woman's body, Woman's Vagina
Many physical changes accompany pregnancy and childbirth. Not surprisingly, many of them involve the vagina and other parts of the reproductive system. The amount of blood in a woman’s body increases by a staggering 50 percent, and most of that added blood ends up in the uterus. A woman’s body undergoes many other changes, and some may strike people as disgusting, alarming or both.
1. The vaginal discharge becomes thicker.

A woman’s vaginal discharge is typically thin, mild-smelling, and clear or milky white. An increase in the amount of vaginal discharge is an early indicator of pregnancy. As pregnancy progresses, the vagina produces more and more discharge, and it often becomes yellow and slimy. It becomes heaviest towards the end of the pregnancy. When the woman starts going into labor, the discharge contains streaks of blood and/or mucus called show.

2. The vagina will change color.

The vagina is typically pink, but it can turn blue or purple when a woman gets pregnant. The color change, which is called Chadwick’s sign, is one of the first indicators of pregnancy, for it can happen as early as six weeks into the pregnancy. The color change is triggered by an increased blood flow to the vagina and other reproductive organs.

3. The urine may start to smell.

During pregnancy, a woman’s body produces a hormone called human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) that can cause urine to develop a pungent smell. Another possible cause for the smell is dehydration. Pregnant women need to drink more water than they would normally. If they don’t, their urine will be dark and smelly.

\
4. The vaginal area swells.

During pregnancy, more blood flows to the vagina. The increased blood flow makes the vagina and labia swell.

5. Some women develop vaginal varicose veins.
Twenty percent of the women who have varicose veins in their legs develop varicose veins in their vagina and/or vulva. Vaginal varicose veins are caused by a combination of hormones, increased blood flow and an enlarged uterus compressing veins in the pelvis. Fortunately, doctors can treat the condition. They can use a transvaginal duplex scan (TVS) that uses ultrasound to locate the problem veins. While the woman is under a local anesthetic, the doctor can use a catheter to close the veins and reroute the blood to healthy vessels.

6. The vagina stretches.

During the late second trimester and early third trimester, the woman’s body produces a hormone called relaxin. As the name suggests, it relaxes the ligaments and enables them to stretch. The relaxin also makes the cervix become wider and softer.

7. The vagina might tear.

Vaginal tearing is common, especially in first-time mothers. While the cervix does dilate, the vaginal outlet still may not get wide enough, and the vagina will tear. The doctor might perform an episiotomy, which is a small cut to the perineum. He will also stitch up any tears, and the stitches will eventually dissolve within six to eight weeks.

8. Blood blisters can form on the labia.

A blood blister is a dark red spot or lump. It doesn’t itch or cause pain. It can bleed if rubbed the wrong way, though. A blood blister will eventually go away on its own.

9. The vagina can develop bruises.

Pregnancy and childbirth put a lot of stress on the body, and the vagina will be sore after delivering a baby. There will also be a lot of post-partum bleeding, and it will be comparable to a heavy period that lasts for several weeks.

10. Pregnant women are susceptible to urinary stress incontinence.

As the baby develops, it presses down on the pelvic floor muscles, urethra and bladder. As a result, the woman has to go to the bathroom more often and is more likely to leak urine if they sneeze, cough or laugh.

After childbirth, it will take several weeks for a woman’s body to revert to normal. The extra blood will be expelled, and postpartum bleeding is comparable to a heavy period that lasts for a few weeks. The uterus and other organs, which were all distended by the pregnancy and childbirth, will eventually revert to their original proportions.

7 Things Every Woman Needs to Know About Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian Cancer

For those who are happily living their lives with the misconstrued idea that ignorance is bliss, perhaps it is time for a rude awakening. The fragility of life is such that the slightest aggravation can lead to serious illnesses or even an untimely death. The best way minimize these events is to capitalize on the endless stream of medical information and implement them into daily routines to enjoy a prolonged lifespan that is free from all health complications.
One of the potential threats to human life is the prevalence of ovarian cancer. Although this condition is only specific to the female population, it is ranked as the fifth most common form of cancer in the world. This terrifying statistic paints a bleak picture for ovarian cancer patients, and the reality of it does not get any better. In 2015 alone, approximately 22,280 women in the United States will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Within the same time frame, there will be 14,240 deaths caused by this disease as well.

Be Smart, Know The Risks!

Risk Factors

Healthy news media characterizes the risk factors related to ovarian cancer as anything that increases its chances of occurring. Unfortunately, every woman is exposed to a certain degree of developing ovarian cancer. This is part of the natural process and cannot be overwritten. Other factors that come into the picture include post-menopausal, obesity and the use of fertility drugs. Women who are above the age of 65 experience an increased risk of illnesses and diseases, with no exception to ovarian cancer while scientists have established a positive relationship between obese women and the possibility of developing ovarian cancer. Compared to women who have their families, those who prescribe to fertility drugs expose themselves to the possibility of ovarian cancer as well.

Last but not least, a study conducted by the Myriad Genetic Laboratories, Salt Lake City, United States, also offers an insightful finding that suggests family heredity plays a part in predicting the risks association with ovarian cancer due to the mutations in BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes.

Survival Rate

One of the most important facts to acknowledge is the survival rate of ovarian cancer. A positive diagnosis of this disease at different stages is strongly influential in determining the chances of a full recovery. For instance, the 5-year survival rate shows that only 46% of the patients were able to overcome this illness. The further investigation highlights a 58% survival rate for women under 65 and a lowered rate of 28% for the remaining patients.

What Happens After Breast Augmentation

The breast augmentation procedure can take place in a hospital outpatient facility or in a surgical center. The entire procedure requires almost 2 hours but you are always advised to go home once it’s done.
Only selective cases require local anesthesia, whereas majorly the procedure takes place through general anesthesia. If you consult a good surgeon for breast augmentation, you are normally briefed through the procedure. You are also inquired about the surgery reasons and your awareness of breast implant. There are things you need to be prepared for in advance, if however by now you are still exploring-here’s a brief description for what to expect from breast augmentation;

How does Breast Augmentation Takes Place?

As already explained, you will be discussed with for the incision and breast size choices. The overview of incision is:

Your surgeon will choose (along with your consent) the point for incision. It will be

Incision under the crease of breast (inframammary)
Under the arm area (axillary)
Around the nipple area (periareolar)
Once the incision is done, the next step involves separating the muscle and breast tissues and the connective tissues of the chest. A pocket is formed in front of the outermost muscle of the chest wall. The breast implant is thus inserted into the pocket, right behind the nipple.

Implants are of two types and you can choose which breast implant to be inserted. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a gel while Saline implants get inserted first and are filled afterwards. The choice of implant depends on your current breast size and affordability as well.

What Her Doctor Discovered About Her “Bad Periods” Changed Her Life

When Kathryn Perrott went to her doctor for debilitating stomach pain and heavy periods, she was often brushed off as overreacting. For years, people dismissed her complaints of severe menstrual cramps were dismissed by doctors, friends, and even family. Her father would send her off to school doubled over in pain, never understanding the full extent of what she was suffering.

Periods Changed Her Life
Despite the fact that approximately 10 percent of women worldwide suffer from endometriosis, it is widely unspoken about. Many doctors aren’t fully aware of the symptoms or treatment options available for the disease despite its prevalence.
So what is endometriosis? The disease occurs when the uterine lining begins to grow on the outside of the uterus, sometimes covering the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic side wall. It may also cover the bladder and bowel, and in extremely rare cases has been found on the lungs and brain.
This extra lining causes severe pelvic pain and heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding. In more serious cases, it can cause scarring and irritation which may lead to infertility in women.

Symptoms
The first and most prominent symptom is extreme cramping during menstruation. Additional symptoms include:
Painful intercourse
Heavy or excessive menstrual bleeding
Lower back pain, which may occur during any time during your cycle
Abnormal bleeding between periods
Extreme bloating

That’s why more and more new mothers are looking to what is touted as a miracle cure by midwives, doulas, and other mothers: eating one’s placenta. But is it all it’s cracked up to be?Placentophagy, or the act of eating the placenta, isn’t a new phenomenon: indeed, ingestion of the placenta has been a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine as far back as the sixteenth century, though it’s unclear if it was the mother who received the treatment. It’s easy to see why people believe the practice is safe, even healthy; after all, most mammals eat the afterbirth from their young. Studies have shown that rats who consume their placenta have a higher pain tolerance during the birthing process. Unfortunately, this is one of the few studies conducted on the topic, and it doesn’t really address the issue at hand: most expectant mothers aren’t planning to eat their placenta during birth, even if circumstances make that possible.
Regarding human placentophagy, research is limited. One survey administered by medical anthropologists at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of South Florida found that about 75 percent of respondents reported benefits including improved lactation, increased energy, and improved mood, but it is unclear if this was a placebo effect or a true outcome of eating the placenta.
Mothers who have been through the process report mixed results.
